Steve Kondik (ri)promette Lollipop a febbraio su OnePlus One, ma il futuro è incerto
La vicenda Micromax - Cyanogen Inc. - OnePlus continua a trascinarsi, soprattutto perché la causa in India è ancora in corso, ma finalmente, dopo un paio di mesi di relativo silenzio, Steve Kondik prende la parola. Il fondatore di Cyanogen Inc. chiarisce infatti alcuni aspetti sia in merito al futuro supporto a OnePlus One, che alla genesi della litigiosa vicenda con Micromax e OnePlus stessa.

OnePlus is a startup just like us, and they are crazy ambitious. I'm not sure our long-term visions are necessarily converging based on the conversations we've had, but we're still going to support the [OnePlus] One. We're still behind them for this device, with plans to ship (Lollipop) next month, and I have no idea what the future holds beyond that.
OnePlus è una startup come noi, e sono follemente ambiziosi. Non sono sicuro che le nostre visioni a lungo termine siano necessariamente convergenti, basandomi sulle conversazioni che abbiamo avuto, ma in ogni caso supporteremo ancora lo OnePlus One.
Lollipop arriverà il prossimo mese, e non ho idea di cosa riserverà il futuro in seguito.
Kondik ribadisce insomma l'impegno per portare Android 5.0 su OnePlus One, ma è chiaramente vago sul futuro, ed a quanto ci dicono delle fonti non ufficiali, OnePlus non avrebbe contattato Cyanogen Inc. in merito allo sviluppo del software per OnePlus Two. Riguardo la controversia che riguarda anche Micromax, Kondik aggiunge:
We're stuck in the middle of a fight between OnePlus and Micromax, because we're supplying the OS to both companies. With each company, a short exclusivity was included in the agreements and we thought they were pretty straightforward. Our agreement with Micromax was a little more specific for the services we were providing, but it was never meant to be retroactive against OnePlus, and that's where the problem came from. With Micromax we were helping build an India-specific device that doesn't really work anywhere else, while OnePlus was designed to be a global device that worked almost everywhere.
Siamo presi nel mezzo ad una battaglia tra OnePlus e Micromax, perché forniamo l'OS ad entrambe le aziende. Con ciascuna di esse, un breve periodo di esclusiva era incluso negli accordi, e pensavamo che questi fossero piuttosto chiari. Il nostro accorto con Micromax era un po' più specifico per i servizi che stavamo fornendo, ma non ha mai voluto essere retroattivo nei confronti di OnePlus, ed è da lì che è nato il problema. Con Micromax stavamo aiutando a costruire un dispositivo specifico per l'India, che non funziona da nessun altra parte, mentre OnePlus è stato progettato per essere un device globale, che funzioni praticamente ovunque.
Kondik rivendica insomma la sua buonafede, valida però solo se Cyanogen Inc. fosse stata davvero ignara dei piani per l'India di OnePlus, e magari anche un po' ingenua nel condurre le trattative con Micromax; ma questo sarà la corte a deciderlo.
Ancor più interessante è però la chiosa, relativa ai guadagni di Cyanogen Inc. Il Cyanogen OS è infatti stato concesso in licenza sia a OnePlus che a Micromax gratuitamente.
We're still a venture-funded company. There's still no focus on monetization, and when those plans do fall in to place it will be once the potential market is much larger. This is the most important thing I hope people understand — we're still in it for the same reasons that the project got started around. We want to bring this new experience that users can help mold and shape as we go. It would be completely idiotic to stray from that.
Siamo ancora un'azienda basata sui finanziatori. Non c'è ancora un focus sulla monetizzazione, e ciò avverrà quando il mercato potenziale sarà molto più ampio. Questa è la cosa più importante che spero la gente capisca - siamo ancora qui per le stesse rafioni per cui il progetto era iniziato.
Vogliamo portare questa nuova esperienza che gli utenti possano aiutare a modellare e formare via via. Sarebbe completamente stupido allontanarsene.
