Moto X in arrivo questa estate: il primo smartphone assemblato in USA

Non è il Moto X (questo il nome ufficiale del così detto "X Phone") quello che stringe in mano Dennis Woodside nell'immagine qui sopra, ma il CEO di Motorola potrebbe posare a breve con il nuovo e atteso smartphone, che sarà in vendita già dalla prossima estate.

Cosa sappiamo quindi di nuovo di questo misterioso modello? Anzitutto che è stato progettato e costruito interamente negli USA: un punto di orgoglio per Motorola, che ne fa un vanto anche nel comunicato stampa che vi riproponiamo a fine articolo. Lo smartphone sarà infatti costruito in Texas, in una struttura precedentemente usata da Nokia, e sarà venduto con il supporto di diversi operatori, una rarità per Motorola. Questa insistenza sugli USA però non rappresenta una buona notizia per noi, e non nutriamo molta fiducia circa una sua diffusione anche all'estero, almeno non al momento del lancio e non per canali ufficiali.

Riguardo lo smartphone in sé, Woodside è stato ovviamente avaro di dettagli, però un paio di cose le ha svelate. Anzitutto avrà uno schermo OLED, inoltre cercherà di risolvere due problemi che per Larry Page sono impellenti: resistenza e autonomia, due fattori nei quali già in passato Motorola si è distinta e sui quali non vediamo ragione per non insistere.

Woodside ha poi aggiunto che "sapremo quando [lo smartphone] sarà nella vostra tasca, sapremo quando sarà nelle vostre mani, saprà anche quando vorrete scattare una foto e così avvierà la fotocamera. Saprà quando siete in auto, per esempio, e sulla base di questo si comporterà in maniera diversa." Insomma, Moto X userà i nuovi servizi per "riconoscere l'attività" di Android, ma questo non significa che avremo un'esperienza stock a bordo dello smartphone.

Per ora insomma non si parla di hardware personalizzabile, mille mila cover colorate o altri aspetti circolati in rete in questi ultimi mesi; per quelli dovremo aspettare, forse anche molto a lungo.

Today at the AllThingsD conference Dennis Woodside revealed how we are reinventing Motorola through a portfolio of products starting with Moto X, a new flagship smartphone that will be designed, engineered and assembled in the USA. We’re not talking about just a handful of units either -- available this summer, every Moto X sold in the USA will be assembled in Fort Worth, Texas, making it the first smartphone ever assembled domestically.

There were a few reasons why we decided to do this. There are several business advantages to having our Illinois and California-based designers and engineers much closer to our factory. For instance, we’ll be able to iterate on design much faster, create a leaner supply chain, respond much more quickly to purchasing trends and demands, and deliver devices to people here much more quickly.

And as a part of Google we’re being encouraged to take big bets on things that make a difference.

We still have a network of global operations, and that won’t change. Our global manufacturing partner remains Flextronics and we’ll continue to assemble devices locally in China and Brazil.
